For those of you who are confused or don't know what MIB & OID is in SNMP, let's talk about easy concepts and the big differences between them.

You should listen to the explanation on the premise that SNMP is basically known. It's similar to studying this first when SNMP doesn't know dust and doesn't know plus, but it's like subtracting it. What are these two? Let me explain the difference between the two.

If you don't know SNMP, please use the link below to get the concept of SNMP.

1. SNMP MIB & OID

If you are an engineer, go out to the field and after installing the switch, the Network Management System (NMS) company will give the MIB or OID values for the switches to the engineer who installed the switch.I get a lot of requests like ~~~~.

Why? MIB and OID are far away.

First of all, MIB, OID is a database that collects information (e.g. interface information, CPU usage, traffic usage information, etc.)

※ MIB (Management Information Base)

- Enterprise MIB: Industry Common MIB

- Private MIBs: Private MIBs created by each vendor

- a collection of specific information resources

- A collection of objects that can be managed by SNMP.

- a collection of specific information resources

※ OID (Object Identifier)

Again~ To explain MIB / OID very easily,

MIB ▶ Textual representation of information values ★★★

OID ▶ numeric representation of information values ★★★

It turns out. It's easier and simpler than you think. I don't know if it's a letter or a number.

Did you understand about MIB/OID?

Managing a variety of network equipment is called NMS (Network Management System), and the NMS manages a large number of SNMP methods and syslog methods, and SNMP represents the state of the equipment by receiving OID values of objects defined in the MIB.

NMS companies collect the necessary information by inserting MIB/OID values for the equipment. MIB/OID values are usually different for each vendor and for each information.

You can get these values by requesting them from the vendor or distributor if you need them.

These days, information about companies with NameValue like Cisco is automatically registered in NMS.

Information about switches from non-famous vendors is often requested from an engineer separately.

I was confused a lot in the beginning because sometimes I asked for MIB value and sometimes I asked for OID value.

Lightly, you just need to understand what the two mean/what the difference is and move on.

If you deal with network equipment, you'll meet them occasionally, but if you're familiar with it, you'll be able to respond comfortably.
